Reduce Drop Rate & Improve CVR

Improvement to carfromjapan.com function resulted from a heuristic review and competitive analysis.

Summary
  • In this project, I noticed a significant drop rate in our product. As a product designer with a mindset of "quick failure leads to quick success," I aim to rapidly test ideas to enhance business metrics.

  • Due to time constraints, we opted not to use formal research methods. Instead, we conducted a heuristic review and competitor analysis to identify issues and test new design solutions for the Carfromjapan inquiry flow.

  • The approach followed in this project was: Define Problems > Define Hypothesis and Metrics > Design > Launch > Validate.

Background

Hand-off with Product Owner: We are currently tracking the inquiry actions of Carfromjapan.com users. Our analysis revealed a significant drop-off rate: approximately 90% for inquiriy users. This indicates that after users view all the relevant information about the cars and click the inquiry or buy now button, they see the form and then decide to exit.

Heuristic Review

We take a closer look at the inquiry pop-up where users drops. I apply a heuristic review to identify usability issues in the inquiry form.

What we want to achieve

Interestingly, 80% of completed orders come through the inquiry form, highlighting its importance in the buyer's journey. When purchasing a car, users tend to deliberate extensively, and the inquiry option offers a lower commitment compared to the buy now option. Therefore, in this scope, we will focus on redesigning and improving the inquiry flow to enhance business metrics.

  1. Reduce Drop Rate in Inquiry Form: Our primary goal is to encourage users to complete and submit the inquiry form instead of dropping off at the pop-up stage.

  2. Maintain Conversion Rate: It's crucial to sustain the current conversion rate for successfully submitted inquiries as a key success metric.

  3. Enhance Usability and Heuristic Quality: We intend to improve the overall usability and heuristic quality of the current UI design.

Key metrics

  1. Reduce drop rates from 90% for inquiry β†’ arround 85%.

  2. Maintain the Conversion rate for send form Successfully around 70%.

  3. One way to track the experience of users after improve the UI is using the CSAT survey.

Our flow

In the previous inquiry flow at Carfromjapan, users typically browse car listings, view details, click 'Inquire Now' to ask questions, and then see a thank-you page confirming their inquiry and informing them to wait for contact from Carfromjapan.

Competitive analysis

Intro why use competitive. Other platforms for buying used cars in U.S?. Since our target users and completed orders from U.S constitute around 90-95%, I focused on comparing other platforms that facilitate used car purchases in U.S. After consulting with the Market team, we identified five direct competitors in this sector. What about platforms in other country

Quick Access

βœ… Pros: Low commitment, clear visual hierachy, ease of information entry, quick information access, suggest similar.

πŸ”» Cons: High volume of spam and increased workload for sales/ customer service teams. Users may be overwhelmed by the amount of information presented and task that they need to completed.

Changing from "Inquiry Now" to "Check Availability"

  • Reduced user commitment: Switching from "Inquiry Now" to "Check Availability" lowers the pressure on users. They feel more comfortable simply checking availability rather than feeling pressured to make an immediate decision.

  • Sense of urgency: "Check Availability" creates a sense of scarcity, encouraging users to act quickly to secure the vehicle they are interested in. This can drive sales by instilling a fear of missing out (FOMO).

  • Additional changes: We're changing the button color from red to blue to foster a sense of trust and reliability among users. The "Buy Now" button will be switched to yellow to align with PayPal's button (on Buy now flow), ensuring a consistent visual experience.

Redesign "Inquiry form"
  • Form restructuring: The form layout is reorganized to enhance clarity and streamline the user experience.

  • Reducing less important elements: Information such as the car's name and price, already visible on the car list screen, is minimized. This helps users focus on filling out the essential details quickly.

  • Updated title and description: Consistent titles and descriptions are provided to clearly communicate the form's purpose.

  • Clear affordance for additional actions: A distinct "Add a coupon" button is added, clearly indicating the option for users to apply discounts.

  • Optional message with templates: The message field is optional but pre-populated with templates specific to each car, making it easier for users to complete without much thought.

Replacing Thank You Page with Pop-Up Feedback
  • Immediate feedback of confirmation: The pop-up provides instant acknowledgment that the user's inquiry has been received.

  • Continued engagement & efficient UX: By not redirecting users to a separate page, they can stay engaged with the current content. This allows them to continue exploring other options or taking additional actions without disruption.

  • Suggestion of similar cars: Including suggestions for similar cars in the pop-up can provide users with additional options that might meet their needs. This can be particularly useful if the car they inquired about is unavailable or if they want to explore more choices, potentially increasing engagement and conversions.
